These geometric designs come from ancient cylindrical stamps, found in the vicinity of Mexico City, and are decorated with hooks and spirals.(above, from "Design Motifs of Ancient Mexico", by Jorge Enciso, page 32) This type of design is common in Pre-Colombian art in both North and South America. It was used in basketry, weaving, and as architectural decoration.
